The claim that never was

Forty two years I have spent caring for fine carpets and tapestries yet I never tire or lose that thrill when our expertise brings a beautiful carpet back from beyond the grave.

How many times have I seen the insured throw their hands up in despair as they are told their recently damaged, irreplaceable family heirloom is beyond any form of restoration.
Can you imagine the delight that follows our testing when we advise that in actual fact – it can.

More to the point, insurers joy when the original claim for £15,000 is reduced to a restoration cost of £1,000!
With each rug worth no less than £1,000 and often many multiples of that, it is understandable how we save insurers so much money each year.

No magical spells or potions just good, old fashioned knowledge and extensive experience based on simple, core facts:-
- Structure and construction technique
- Dye technique
- Finishing technique

that changes from rug to rug, from country to country; knowing these and the experience of having performed the same successful operation many times before, is the key.

Viability
But long before the damage can be treated – is it viable?
What’s the point throwing hundreds of pounds at a claim that in reality can be successfully concluded for £50?
How do you know what the cost and viability framework are without the guidance of an experienced knowledgeable specialist?

Apart from emergency salvage treatments, the primary urgency of a full Damage Report, including all the affected values, is critical to the correct avenue to be taken in respect of speedily and effectively concluding the claim.

Water damage
It is not rocket science to figure out that water damaged carpets and tapestries must be dried to restrict the damage extent.
However it is not so well understood that these same valuable carpets and tapestries must be treated with experienced care from the word GO.
1. Bad handling
2. Over drying
3. Lack of pre and post-drying treatments will destroy the item far more than the original damage.

1 – Bad Handling
A carpet is like a large sponge soaking up gallons of flood water. Start trying to pull that soaked carpet around strains, weakens and damages the carpet often beyond potential restoration.
Careful, knowledgeable handling whilst in the soaked stage actively reduces the damage extent.

2 – Over drying
Dries in the water’s deposits causing the pile to ‘cake’, making both the structure and pile very brittle as well as often discoloured.
Neutralising and removing the problem source from the fibres improves the item’s ability to withstand the trauma and thereby stabilise it’s integrity and ability to return to pre-damage condition.

3 - Lack of pre and post-drying treatments
Understandably these just exacerbate the original damage problem.
However correct pre and post drying treatments actually again increase the item’s integrity, drastically reduce the original damaging effects (such as structure rot, mildew etc.) increasing it’s ability to return to pre-damage condition.

But all of this is heavily dependant on speed – the longer the item is left wet with all the damaging materials inside, the ability to restore to pre-damage condition rapidly decreases by the hour.

Restoration
This does require specifically designated technical facilities whether through:-
- Cleansing
- Chemical
- Or physical repair

Fire or smoke damage
Although not quite as time critical as water damage, nevertheless failure to act within a reasonable time frame allows the smoke particles to work their way deep into the fibres making it more difficult to remove both them and the disastrous affects they generate.
Whilst ozone is a very useful tool, it does not remove the deep seated deposits allowing them to ferment and cause serious fibre damage.
Knowledge of the:-
- Damage source
- Time delay

are critical for the professional restorer – without these facts we hunt for a needle in a haystack.

To minimise financial loss to the insurer and ‘physical’ loss to the insured requires the three S’s
SPEED
SPEED
SPEED

As each different situation generates it’s own specific challenges, there can be no replicated rule to resolve each individual claim but following the above guidelines enables us to save insurers hundreds of thousands of pounds each year and the insured – their most valuable, irreplaceable heirloom.
